Some (and by that I mean one or two only) are films that I think could do with being remade, but the vast majority of the films that follow I simply cannot understand why they would need remaking.

I do understand some of the motivations for Hollywood to remake films – lapsing of copyright on the originating materials being chief among them – but is it really expecting too much from the leading producer of western cinematic product to give us some originality?
If the films fail at the box office at least they would have tried, rather than having a lacklustre attempt at regaining the fever (or otherwise) that greeted the original.
Anyway, on with the list, and in no particular order …

I haven’t ever really done this before, so why not give it a go now?
Well, why not indeed, so here’s a list of science fiction (or at least sci-fi tinged) films I’d like to see this year.
There may be more that crop up along the way, but for the moment these are the ones right now that I’m keen to view.

Season of the Witch
I find something very watchable about Nic Cage.
14th-century knights transport a suspected witch to a monastery, where monks deduce her powers could be the source of the Black Plague. – IMDB
The Rite
A priest reluctantly goes to the Vatican to attend exorcism school, and then meets a maverick priest (played by Anthony Hopkins!) who reveals that the Devil’s reach goes much farther than he expected. – io9
Drive Angry
Again with the Nic Cage
Now here’s a movie that looks like Nic Cage belongs in it! He’s a dead guy who breaks out of Hell to stop the cult that killed his daughter from sacrificing her baby. Let’s hope he actually drives through the gates of Hell. – io9
The Adjustment Bureau
The affair between a politician and a ballerina is affected by mysterious forces keeping the lovers apart. – IMDB
It looks like a cross between The Matrix and Inception.
Apollo 18
A film about the real mission to space in the 1970′s that was canceled by NASA. – IMDB
Battle : Los Angeles
A Marine platoon faces off against an alien invasion in Los Angeles. – IMDB
Alien-invasion films appear to be cropping up all over the place in 2011 — please don’t let alien invasions be the new sparkly vampires.
Red Riding Hood
Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family’s displeasure. – IMDB
I hope this is a proper adult film, and not some sort of watered down 12 rated wimp-out.
The last thing I’d like to see is Warewolves go down the same route that vampires did in Hollywood films.
Suing the Devil
Malcolm Mcdowell as the devil!
What’s not to like about the above sentence?
Limitless
A copywriter (Bradley Cooper) discovers a drug that gives him superhuman powers, but as he starts to probe the drug’s origin, a group of shadowy killers is on his trail. Also starring Robert De Niro. – io9
Paul
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost play British nerds who pick up an alien outside Area 51 and then get chased around by Jason Bateman as a special agent. – FilmCritic
I’m finding it very difficult to come up with anything wrong about the above scenario.
Sucker Punch
The story of a young girl in a mental institution. She retreats into a bizarre fantasy world, which helps her hatch a plan to escape from the facility. – io9
I’ve been waiting for this for some time. Looks brilliant.
Source Code
An action thriller centered on a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown man and discovers he’s part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. – IMDB
From the same director as Moon, which was one of 2009′s standout films for me.
Super
It has Nathan Fillion in it as a superhero. I need say no more.
Your Highness
Zooey Deschanel! That is all.
Thor
Kenneth Branagh (!) directs the next Marvel Comics movie, about the Asgardian Thunder God who’s cast down to Earth and finds love with the suddenly ubiquitous Natalie Portman. – io9
Priest
A priest disobeys church law to track down the vampires who kidnapped his niece. – IMDB
X-Men : First Class
Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-MEN. – IMDB
Super 8
[J.J.] Abrams is helming what appears to be another alien-monster film, this one produced by Steven Spielberg, set in the seventies. If he pulls this off, I might even be willing to forgive him the red matter in the last Star Trek film. Maybe. – FilmCritic
I’m kinda with him on the Star Trek thing, but that’s not for now.
Rise of the Apes
A prequel to Planet of the Apes, this film shows how genetic experimentation in the present day creates a super-intelligent ape, Caesar, who goes on to lead an uprising. – io9
Sinbad : The Fifth Voyage
When the Sultan’s first born is taken by an evil sorcerer, Sinbad is tasked with traveling to a desert of magic and creatures to save her. – IMDB
Apparently this is going to be a lovingly crafted tribute to Ray Harryhausen. I hope it lives up to that.
Captain America
Steve Rogers wants to join the fight in World War II, but he’s too weak — until he takes an experimental serum that transforms him into a paragon, Captain America. The last of Marvel’s movies setting up next year’s The Avengers. – io9
Cowboys and Aliens
Another alien invasion film.
The track record for science-fiction and/or comic-book-related Westerns is very bad indeed. (See Jonah Hex and Wild Wild West.) But the presence of Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford means that, even if it fails, it’ll fail with at least a little bit of style.
Conan the Barbarian
The tale of Conan the Cimmerian and his adventures across the continent of Hyboria on a quest to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village. - IMDB
There’s rumours that this will be 3D. (8+/
Fright Night
A remake of the 1985 original.
Now
Eternal youth costs and if you can’t afford it, well, you die.
The Thing
Not a remake of the John Carpenter 1982 classic, which itself was a remake of the 1951 original, but instead it’s a prequel. We finally get to find out what happened to the inhabitants of the camp before Kurt Russell and his team got despatched there.
Hugo Cabret
Martin Scorsese makes a huge departure, into movies for younger audiences — and a more fanciful story. A young boy hides inside the Paris train station and winds up repairing a mechanical man. And it’s sort of a retelling of the life of Georges Méliès, one of the first ever science fiction film-makers. – io9
I really really want this to be as good as I think it should be.
M:I:4
Please make it as good as the first one.
Sherlock Holmes 2
The sequel to 2009′s runaway hit reunites director Guy Ritchie and stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Let’s hope they have more weird steampunk doom machines this time around. – io9
I’m with the more steampunk brigade on this.
The Adventures of Tintin : Secret of the Unicorn
This one isn’t strictly science fiction or fantasy, but Tintin lives in a kind of fantasy world, full of trips into space, weird occurrences and larger-than-life adventures — and we can’t imagine that the teaming of Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson (with some writing by Steven Moffat) won’t include some nods to Tintin’s more fantastical adventures. – io9

My annual tradition of posting all the films I’ve seen in the past 12 months rolls around once again.

I initially planned to systematically work my way through the BFI’s top 100 films, but after an abortive start to that I quickly realised that there were other films I’d much rather be watching, so I concentrated on those instead.

Highlights of the year included Transsiberian, Stalker, Kick-Ass and Sunshine Cleaning.
Lowlights were The Human Centipede , Paranormal Activity and Avatar.
Special mention this year goes to TRON : Legacy for possibly bridging the longest gap between original film and sequel in Hollywood history – I also enjoyed it very much, and Jackie Chan, for making so many enjoyable films.

I’d kinda also like to thank Film4 for showing the first ten Star Trek films back-to-back over the course of two nights.
That was a fun couple of evenings spent on Twiter whilst watching the films.

I seem to say this every year, but I’d like to see more science fiction films in 2011 than I did in 2010, though once again personal circumstances conspire against me in my quest to watch more films at the cinema, but we’ll see how that goes as the year moves along.

Follow the link below to get to the film listings for 2010.
I had the misfortune to see last nights show and it was truly awful.
The host hardly said anything, it was all down to some other person in the rather one-sided conversation to come up with the ‘insights’ and when the host did get a turn to speak the most interesting thing to come out of her mouth was “I agree”.
I mean, WTF?!?
There was hardly any commentary to camera and what there was was just introducing a taped interview.
I’ve been a fan of this show since I was young. Barry Norman an Jonathan Ross presented the show really well, but after last nights performance I could happily never watch it again.
What a shame.

For the past week or so the Guardian has been running a series of film lists, running down the top 25 in specific genres.
The science fiction and fantasy top 25 was posted today, and I have issues with it.

How the hell did Starship Troopers make the list? I don’t care that it’s in last place in the rankings, it shouldn’t be there at all.
Howard the Duck is a better science fiction film than that!

Really pleased to see The Princess Bride on the list.

Very pleased to see The Day the Earth Stood Still on the list too, but it should be higher placed, especially given some of the entries that get placed above it.

Dark Star … hooray. \•/

Brazil … hooray. Though, like The Day the Earth Stood Still, it should be higher placed, especially since …

Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes?!? I’m not sure which riles me more, this or Starship Troopers.
Certainly the weakest of Tim Burton’s films and there’s no way that it should be in this list.

Alphaville … hooray.

The Matrix. I’m a little undecided on this one. While I did (and still do) enjoy it, and it has been influential inside and out of the sci-fi genre, is it really good enough to be quite so high on a ‘greatest list of all time’? I’m not so sure.

Solaris (remake). No, Guardian. Just no.
What the hell are you thinking?!? How can you possibly place this so high and yet completely dismiss the original?
How can you preclude the original’s appearance when you place Starship Troopers in the list?
I simply cannot fathom how the original Solaris does not even get a look-in on this list.

I can’t really fault the top 3.

I would like to say that splitting Horror in to a separate top 25 would probably have me putting Alien in that list and not having it in the science fiction & fantasy list, despite that film being set in space it’s very much more a horror film than it is a science fiction film.

To put all this in context, here’s the list the Guardian has composed of Science Fiction & Fantasy films :

1) 2001: A Space Odyssey
2) Metropolis
3) Blade Runner
4) Alien
5) The Wizard of Oz
6) Solaris
7) ET: The Extra-Terrestrial
8) Spirited Away
9) Star Wars
10) King Kong
11) Close Encounters of the Third Kind
12) The Terminator/Terminator 2: Judgment Day
13) The Matrix
14) Alphaville
15) Back to the Future
16) Planet of the Apes
17) Brazil
18) The Lord of the Rings trilogy
19) Dark Star
20) The Day the Earth Stood Still
21) Edward Scissorhands
22) Akira
23) The Princess Bride
24) Pan’s Labyrinth
25) Starship Troopers

Would the world end, again, twice?

This is just a small collection of news tidbits and rumours from around the web.
Some may be spoilers, some may be conjecture and fan wishlists.
I make no apologies for the veracity (or otherwise) of these comments.
So what do we ‘know’ so far?
The season will be split in two, taking a summer break to return in the autumn.
The Sun reported that Amy Pond will be the big cliffhanger to the first part of the season, but then The Sun has probably reported on the death of every main character since RTD brought the show back.
We’ll find out just who River Song is.
River Song could actually be Amy Pond.
Amy Pond could be River’s and The Doctor’s child.
Neil Gaiman has written an episode.
Let me just say that again … Neil Gaiman has written an episode.

So, is there anything that I’ve missed?
If so leave a message in the comment section below.

Sky1 has abandoned it’s plans to bring back Blake’s 7, according to the Media Guardian and other news outlets.
The Media Guardian quotes “Following the development process we have decided not to produce Blake’s 7. However, Sky continues to invest heavily in original drama and it remains at the heart of our plans,” said a spokeswoman for Sky1. “We have just announced an extended run for the second series of Chris Ryan’s Strike Back and we’ll soon be unveiling a new long-running series for prime time.“

This both saddens me as well as cheers me.
This is quite possibly my all-time favourite science fiction TV show, and as such I wouldn’t like it to make a come-back and be derided. It also means I’ll not see an inferior version of the greatest space ship design ever (in my opinion).
It saddens me because it means the door has now closed – for the time being – on any possible greatness that a remake could have achieved – think the recent “re-imagining” of Battlestar Galactica.

I do still hope that this show will one day make a triumphant come-back and be as much loved again as the recent Doctor Who is now. I guess I’ll just have to wait a little bit longer.
