I do understand some of the motivations for Hollywood to remake films – lapsing of copyright on the originating materials being chief among them – but is it really expecting too much from the leading producer of western cinematic product to give us some originality?
If the films fail at the box office at least they would have tried, rather than having a lacklustre attempt at regaining the fever (or otherwise) that greeted the original.

Alien-invasion films appear to be cropping up all over the place in 2011 — please don’t let alien invasions be the new sparkly vampires.
Red Riding Hood
Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family’s displeasure. – IMDB
I hope this is a proper adult film, and not some sort of watered down 12 rated wimp-out.
The last thing I’d like to see is Warewolves go down the same route that vampires did in Hollywood films.

[J.J.] Abrams is helming what appears to be another alien-monster film, this one produced by Steven Spielberg, set in the seventies. If he pulls this off, I might even be willing to forgive him the red matter in the last Star Trek film. Maybe. – FilmCritic

Rise of the Apes
A prequel to Planet of the Apes, this film shows how genetic experimentation in the present day creates a super-intelligent ape, Caesar, who goes on to lead an uprising. – io9
Sinbad : The Fifth Voyage
When the Sultan’s first born is taken by an evil sorcerer, Sinbad is tasked with traveling to a desert of magic and creatures to save her. – IMDB
Apparently this is going to be a lovingly crafted tribute to Ray Harryhausen. I hope it lives up to that.
Captain America
Steve Rogers wants to join the fight in World War II, but he’s too weak — until he takes an experimental serum that transforms him into a paragon, Captain America. The last of Marvel’s movies setting up next year’s The Avengers. – io9
Cowboys and Aliens
Another alien invasion film.
The track record for science-fiction and/or comic-book-related Westerns is very bad indeed. (See Jonah Hex and Wild Wild West.) But the presence of Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford means that, even if it fails, it’ll fail with at least a little bit of style.
Conan the Barbarian
The tale of Conan the Cimmerian and his adventures across the continent of Hyboria on a quest to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village. - IMDB
There’s rumours that this will be 3D. (8+/
Fright Night
A remake of the 1985 original.

Eternal youth costs and if you can’t afford it, well, you die.
The Thing
Not a remake of the John Carpenter 1982 classic, which itself was a remake of the 1951 original, but instead it’s a prequel. We finally get to find out what happened to the inhabitants of the camp before Kurt Russell and his team got despatched there.
Hugo Cabret
Martin Scorsese makes a huge departure, into movies for younger audiences — and a more fanciful story. A young boy hides inside the Paris train station and winds up repairing a mechanical man. And it’s sort of a retelling of the life of Georges Méliès, one of the first ever science fiction film-makers. – io9
I really really want this to be as good as I think it should be.

The sequel to 2009′s runaway hit reunites director Guy Ritchie and stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Let’s hope they have more weird steampunk doom machines this time around. – io9

The Adventures of Tintin : Secret of the Unicorn
This one isn’t strictly science fiction or fantasy, but Tintin lives in a kind of fantasy world, full of trips into space, weird occurrences and larger-than-life adventures — and we can’t imagine that the teaming of Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson (with some writing by Steven Moffat) won’t include some nods to Tintin’s more fantastical adventures. – io9

I initially planned to systematically work my way through the BFI’s top 100 films, but after an abortive start to that I quickly realised that there were other films I’d much rather be watching, so I concentrated on those instead.

Highlights of the year included Transsiberian, Stalker, Kick-Ass and Sunshine Cleaning.
Lowlights were The Human Centipede , Paranormal Activity and Avatar.
Special mention this year goes to TRON : Legacy for possibly bridging the longest gap between original film and sequel in Hollywood history – I also enjoyed it very much, and Jackie Chan, for making so many enjoyable films.

I’d kinda also like to thank Film4 for showing the first ten Star Trek films back-to-back over the course of two nights.
That was a fun couple of evenings spent on Twiter whilst watching the films.

I seem to say this every year, but I’d like to see more science fiction films in 2011 than I did in 2010, though once again personal circumstances conspire against me in my quest to watch more films at the cinema, but we’ll see how that goes as the year moves along.

How the hell did Starship Troopers make the list? I don’t care that it’s in last place in the rankings, it shouldn’t be there at all.
Howard the Duck is a better science fiction film than that!

Really pleased to see The Princess Bride on the list.

Very pleased to see The Day the Earth Stood Still on the list too, but it should be higher placed, especially given some of the entries that get placed above it.

Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes?!? I’m not sure which riles me more, this or Starship Troopers.
Certainly the weakest of Tim Burton’s films and there’s no way that it should be in this list.

Alphaville … hooray.

The Matrix. I’m a little undecided on this one. While I did (and still do) enjoy it, and it has been influential inside and out of the sci-fi genre, is it really good enough to be quite so high on a ‘greatest list of all time’? I’m not so sure.

Solaris (remake). No, Guardian. Just no.
What the hell are you thinking?!? How can you possibly place this so high and yet completely dismiss the original?
How can you preclude the original’s appearance when you place Starship Troopers in the list?
I simply cannot fathom how the original Solaris does not even get a look-in on this list.

I can’t really fault the top 3.

I would like to say that splitting Horror in to a separate top 25 would probably have me putting Alien in that list and not having it in the science fiction & fantasy list, despite that film being set in space it’s very much more a horror film than it is a science fiction film.

This both saddens me as well as cheers me.
This is quite possibly my all-time favourite science fiction TV show, and as such I wouldn’t like it to make a come-back and be derided. It also means I’ll not see an inferior version of the greatest space ship design ever (in my opinion).
It saddens me because it means the door has now closed – for the time being – on any possible greatness that a remake could have achieved – think the recent “re-imagining” of Battlestar Galactica.

I do still hope that this show will one day make a triumphant come-back and be as much loved again as the recent Doctor Who is now. I guess I’ll just have to wait a little bit longer.
